I envy a 75-year-old Swedish woman…

by Bart on Jul.13, 2007, under Technology

…and I feel odd saying that, but let me explain.

internetblazing.jpg

“A 75-year-old woman from Karlstad in central Sweden has been given a scorching 40 Gbps internet connection — the fastest residential connection anywhere in the world. Sigbritt Löthberg is the mother of Swedish internet guru Peter Löthberg, who is using his mother to prove that fiber networks can deliver a cost-effective, ultra-fast connection. Sigbritt, who has never owned a computer before, can now watch 1,500 HDTV channels simultaneously or download a whole high definition DVD in two seconds. Apparently ‘the hardest part of the whole project was installing Windows on Sigbritt’s PC.’”

The secret behind Sigbritt’s ultra-fast connection is a new modulation technique which allows data to be transferred directly between two routers up to 2,000 kilometres apart, with no intermediary transponders.

According to Karlstad Stadsnät the distance is, in theory, unlimited - there is no data loss as long as the fibre is in place.

Hmm… Wonder if she needs help… You know, she might not know what to do with all that bandwidth, so… Just in case, I’ll just throw it out there and say that I personally love Sweden and will fix your computer for free, Mrs. Löthberg. Ma’am. :)

Did you know that engineers can be funny?

by Bart on Jul.10, 2007, under Technology

The “Retroencabulator” is a long-standing joke among engineers, however the company mentioned in the youtube video exists, and I’ve personally had the torture of watching product demo videos for products that are just as technobabblish.

The original machine had a base-plate of prefabulated amulite, surrounded by a malleable logarithmic casing in such a way that the two spurving bearings were in direct line with the pentametric fan, the latter consisted simply of six hydrocoptic marzelvanes, so fitted to the ambifacient lunar vaneshaft that side fumbling was effectively prevented. The main winding was of the normal lotus-o-delta type placed in panendermic semiboloid solts in the stator, every seventh conductor being connected by a non-reversible termic pipe to the differential girdlespring on the ‘up’ end of the grammeter.

Technobabblish. My first coined word of the day.

Backups=lifesavers

by Bart on Jun.30, 2007, under Technology

I have found an interesting solution for online backup. It’s called Mozy, and their free option gives you 2GB of free space to back up your documents and any other files you might want. Here are the features:

  • 2GB of free, secure storage
  • Open/locked file support
  • Block-level differential backup
  • 128-bit SSL support (to secure your data during transport)
  • 448-bit Blowfish encryption (to secure your data on their server)
  • Continuous or scheduled backup options

How it works is like this: you create an account, download an install the Mozy backup software, select the files to be backed up and create a backup plan, and you’re set. The link above contains a referral code, which will give both you and me 250 MB of extra space once you sign up. Automatic backups will occur just as you want them to (at set times, when your computer is idle, etc). Your data first gets encrypted locally, and then it’s uploaded to their servers.

After all, you are basically just making sure you have your latest version of the files backed up somewhere. As it’s written on their site, the alternatives to doing this would be:

  • Burn a new CD or DVD every Sunday night and store them at your brother-in-law’s office.
  • Pay $200/year for an online backup service that uses old, mediocre software.
  • Buy a $200 external hard drive and hope your office doesn’t burn down.
  • Do nothing and don’t worry about backup. (We suggest closing your eyes, plugging your ears and repeating “I’m in my happy place, I’m in my happy place.”)
  • Run a cron job of rsync, gzip and mcrypt piped over ssh to your friend’s server over his DSL line.

All in all, I believe it’s a pretty neat backup solution. My assistant Malcolm Donaldson first told me about this.

The Day of the iPhone is upon us

by Bart on Jun.29, 2007, under Technology

iphone-apple2.jpg

Well, it’s today. At 6pm tonight, hundreds of Apple and AT&T stores will fling open their doors and distribute an estimated 3 million iPhones to the greedy masses. Priced at $499 and $599 for the 4 and 8 gig versions, these sleek glass-enclosed do-it-all phones are set to make some kind of history. If for nothing else, they will have made history for the hype. Just go to digg.com, and search for iPhone. The amount of people talking about this device is astounding. It’s not really as “revolutionary” as the founder, Steve Jobs, would have us believe, but it has a nice set of features and I think the “cool factor” will keep a lot of these things selling.

I shouldn’t talk too loud. I did buy an iPod. And I’d take an iPhone if you gave it to me. But I won’t be buying one. At least, not within the next two years as my T-Mobile contract expires. =)

I have to admit. It is kind of fun to watch people get so worked up about a phone. What a greedy consumer-oriented world we live in.

SaveNetRadio

by Bart on Jun.22, 2007, under Technology

July 15th, the music will stop.

I don’t know about you, but I almost always have my Winamp /Shoutcast radio streams playing. But not for much longer…

Yes that’s right, friends. The future of Internet radio is in immediate danger.  Royalty rates for webcasters have been drastically increased by a recent ruling (300 to 1200 percent!) and are due to go into effect on July 15 (retroactive to Jan 1, 2006!).   To protest these rates and encourage the millions of net radio listeners to take action and contact their Congressional representatives, a national Day of Silence will be held June 26.  Webcasters across the country will observe this day of silence in a number of ways, including dedicating entire programs to the campaign to save Internet Radio and broadcasting complete silence.

If our Congress members are not contacted, and the RIAA is continued to be allowed to have it’s way, then free Net Radio will die in just 22 days.  To find out more information or to send a letter to the people in charge (as I have done), please visit SaveNetRadio.org or click on the banner on the sidebar to support our radio freedom!

AT&T Broadband for $10 a month

by Bart on Jun.19, 2007, under Tech Deals

AT&T just released a dirt-cheap DSL offer geared for first-time DSL subscribers with a rate of only $10 a month, fiber.jpg including a free $49-value modem.

The telecom giant is offering AT&T Yahoo! High-Speed Internet to only new customers which include users who have not been an AT&T Yahoo High Speed Internet, or Bell South High Speed Internet, subscriber for the past 12 months.

The offer, which requires a one-year contract, will be in place until Dec. 29, 2009, but as the Associated Press noted in a posting on the Wall Street Journal, finding the registration form on AT&T’s Web site may not be easy.

Users will need to click on the button for “Get DSL at a Dial-up Price”, which is under the basic DSL $14.99 heading. From there, users will need to enter their relevant information.

That wasn’t supposed to happen

by Bart on Jun.14, 2007, under Technology

1. go to (almost) any website

2. delete everything in the address bar

3. paste the following code in the address bar:

javascript:R=0; x1=.1; y1=.05; x2=.25; y2=.24; x3=1.6; y3=.24; x4=300; y4=200; x5=300; y5=200; DI=document.getElementsByTagName("img"); DIL=DI.length; function A(){for(i=0; i-DIL; i++){DIS=DI[ i ].style; DIS.position=’absolute’; DIS.left=(Math.sin(R*x1+i*x2+x3)*x4+x5)+”px”; DIS.top=(Math.cos(R*y1+i*y2+y3)*y4+y5)+”px”}R++}setInterval(’A()’,5); void(0);

4. press enter and have fun

Try it on Google.com or Flikr, for example. Go on. Just try it.

Online Desktop

by Bart on May.22, 2007, under Technology

I’ve been using Google Docs & Spreadsheets for some time now. And… I really like it. I think it’s the future, but not necessarily the now (Office 2007 is flat-out awesome).

But wait…. An online solution that wants to compete with Google Docs? And they’re free? And they have more features than Google? No way!
