Just in case you wanted to call that aunt in Germany

“Iowa based AllFreeCalls is letting people make phone calls to many foreign countries for free. Or rather, for the cost of a call to Iowa. You call the AllFreeCalls phone number, which is 712-858-8094, and at the prompt dial 011, the country code you are calling and the number you wish to call. The call is made at no charge to the user. A list of supported countries and prefixes is here, and the company says they are adding ten more countries in the coming weeks.

Here’s my understanding of how this works: the founder created his own telephone company in Iowa. Iowa is apparently the only state taking advantage of an FCC kickback scheme that gives telco’s a portion of the fees generated from every inbound call to an Iowa number. So when you call the AllFreeCalls phone number, a portion of any long distance fees you are paying go to the company. The kickback is apparently authorized via the Universal Service Fund. These kickbacks are enough on average to more than cover the international outbound calling fees.”

  1. Like Futurephone this is taking advantage of an FCC kickback supported by the US Universal Service Fund (USF). This is exploiting a fund the FCC set up to assist states in the US where telecom systems are considered weak, in this case Iowa. Futurephone and Allfrecalls are making money out of the USF/FCC and you for every generated call, you are paying at least 6 cents a minute when long distance calling is not included in your plan. I’m more than sure that this isn’t allowed to continue for long — that’s really not what the USF is for!

  2. Thanks for your comment. I understand more clearly now how the system works, and it’s one of many such “phone hacks” I’ve seen lately.Everything from hacked SIP plugins running on Skype’s software, to instructions for adding numbers, such as the one from allFreeCalls, to T-Mobile MyFave buddy list to get a potential DOUBLE HACK for free calls.

But I’m sure it’s all going to come crashing down. You can only bypass governmental/phone company fees for so long before it undermines the system and I’m sure a crackdown is imminent.

Seems to be legal to use this to call, but perhaps not for long. Thanks for the read!
